Space Quest Board Game

This piece was done for my final project in my Graphic Design II class. The requirements were that the game had to be for 5-7 year olds and that the subject matter of the game had to be on ecosystems. This project was done with 2 other group members and we of course chose space for our ecosystem.

Knowing the demographic, we wanted the game to appear to be an adventure and to invoke as much fantasy as possible in the players.

The object of the game is to leave your ship and visit each of the planets on the board, while answering questions about space and trying to return back to the ship before your other players.

The questions are fairly simple given the age group and basically were what we considered to be common space knowledge. For instance:

How many planets are in the solar system?
A- 4
B- 9
C- 3
D- 15

In addition to question spaces, there are also chance spaces where the player must draw a card if they land on one of those spaces. A chance card will either involve something good (move spaces) or something bad (stay in place). For example: if a player draws a card that says they landed in an asteriod field, they would have to stay in place for one turn.

To go along with the question answering process, each player will be issued a spinner (pictured above) that will have an oxygen tank and spaces for 02 stickers. The oxygen tank is full when the player begins, but for each question answered wrong, it will deplete 1 space. If a player happens to run out of oxygen, they must return to the ship. The 02 stickers reward players for correct answers. For each 02 sticker a player gets, they will get a pass on an incorrect answer which will prevent the oxygen tank from being depleted.

The game may come off as a little too complex for the age group, but an assumption was made that there would be parental supervision, which is almost always the case with this demographic.
